European Parliament criticizes Polish government. On Wednesday, the European Parliament condemned the Polish government's acts curtailing the Constitutional Tribunal. This is the second time the European Union has criticized the Polish government for threatening the rule of law, but the efforts have produced few results, leading some to conclude that such efforts demonstrate the impotence of the EU.

African Union to observe Gabonese election appeal. Following last month's presidential election, opposition leader Jean Ping is seeking a recount in the Gabonese province of Haut-Ogooue, where 95% of voters (at 99.9% turnout) supposedly voted for incumbent Ali Bongo. The African Union is sending observers, who will join European Union observers already in the country, to monitor Ping's appeal at the Constitutional Court, though the role of the observers remains unclear.

Ukrainian Constitutional Court overturns law requiring permits for religious events. Last week, the Ukrainian Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional a law which required government approval for public religious events. While other events required notification, only religious events required permission, which the court found offensive to the constitutional freedoms of religion, assembly, and equality.
