Brazilian court blocks mining in Amazon reserve. A Brazilian judge enjoined a decree by President Michel Temer which would have allowed mining in the Renca reserve, a protected area of the Amazon Rainforest. The court held that, according to the constitution, such a decree required congressional authorization; the government has said it will appeal the decision.

Federal court finds Texas’s anti-sanctuary city law unconstitutional. On Wednesday, Judge Orlando Garcia of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas blocked parts of the controversial law known as SB 4, holding that the State of Texas may not compel city governments to enforce federal immigration law or cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The state has promised an immediate appeal.

Indian court considers making marital rape a crime. On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court heard arguments regarding whether exempting men from prosecution for marital rape amounts to unconstitutional discrimination against women who are sexually assaulted. The government argued that criminalizing marital rape would destroy the institution of marriage.
