Poland retreats from proposed total abortion ban. Responding to massive protests, a Polish parliamentary committee unexpectedly declined to back a total prohibition of abortion yesterday. Though Poland already bans abortion except in cases of rape, incest, and threat to the life of the mother, the bill’s sponsors cited the constitutional right to life as justification for further restriction.
Hungarian prime minister grounds refugee policy in invalid referendum. On Sunday, 40% of Hungarian voters turned out to a referendum to reject EU-imposed quotas on the minimum number of refugees and asylum seekers the country must accept. The vote holds no legal weight, as Hungarian plebiscites must reach 50% turnout to be valid, but Prime Minister Viktor Orban has nonetheless vowed to amend Hungary’s constitution accordingly.
Colombian voters reject FARC peace treaty. Colombian voters shockingly rejected a peace deal with FARC rebels on Sunday, despite polls showing 66% of voters being in favor of the measure. The government has announced plans to meet with political leaders who opposed the peace deal in order to work toward a solution, but the ceasefire with FARC will officially end on October 31.
