Indonesia criminalizes criticism of lawmakers. The parliament of Indonesia has passed a law making it illegal to “disrespect the dignity” of members of parliament and the parliamentary institution. The law, which took effect last week, has drawn intense protest and faces legal challenges at the Constitutional Court.
New York court rules POTUS can be sued for unofficial acts. On Tuesday, the New York County Supreme Court held that President Trump can be sued in state court for unofficial acts, rejecting the argument that the president is constitutionally immune during his time in office. The ruling, which states that “no one is above the law,” allows for a defamation suit to proceed against the President.
South Korean president proposes constitutional amendments. South Korean President Moon Jae-in unveiled a series of draft constitutional reforms this week that are aimed at increasing government accountability via “direct democracy.” Moon will need support from the conservative opposition in order to submit the amendments to a referendum.
