Sri Lanka Cabinet approves draft bill to amend the constitution. The bill includes a series of proposed reforms, including changing the form of government to a Presidential-Parliamentary system, eliminating the President’s power to dissolve Parliament, and restricting the President’s tenure to two terms. The bill will be tabled in Parliament this week.

Former President of Maldives convicted. A three-judge panel sentenced former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed to thirteen years in prison for issuing an illegal order to detain a judge in 2012. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the US State Department have both expressed concerns about the criminal procedures used during the trial.

Thai constitution to be promulgated by September 4, 2015. Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister has announced that the Constitution Drafting Committee will complete the draft constitution by May 25, after which it will consider recommendations and amendments. The final constitution will be submitted to the King for promulgation no later than September 4, 2015.
