South African court permits secret no-confidence vote. On Thursday, the Constitutional Court of South Africa ruled that the Speaker of the legislature may decide whether a no-confidence vote on President Jacob Zuma will be held in secret. The court appeared to encourage a secret vote, writing that the vote should not be “a fear or money-inspired sham.”

Egyptian court halts decisions on Red Sea islands transfer. Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court has temporarily halted all court rulings regarding an agreement to transfer the uninhabited Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia. The Egyptian government contends that the islands belong to Saudi Arabia, but many Egyptians have protested the planned transfer, arguing that President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is attempting to sell Egyptian land.

Mali delays constitutional referendum. On Wednesday, the Malian government announced that it is indefinitely postponing a constitutional referendum originally scheduled for July 9. Malians have intensely protested the proposed constitutional amendments, which would create five new administrative regions in the north and a second legislative chamber, one-third of which would be appointed by the president.
