Ireland votes to legalize abortion. Last weekend, Irish citizens overwhelmingly voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the country's constitution, which bans abortion except to save the life of the mother. By the end of the year, first-trimester abortions will be legal.

Zimbabwe to hold presidential election. On July 30, Zimbabwe will hold its first presidential election following the ouster of long-time dictator Robert Mugabe. In a blow to the opposition, the Constitutional Court has ruled that Zimbabweans living abroad — who amount to 20% of the country's population — will not be allowed to vote.
