Polish government attempts to sack one third of Supreme Court. Poland’s judicial crisis intensified this week when a law purporting to force more than a third of supreme court justices to retire took effect. Some of the justices are refusing to accept their dismissal, however, and the European Court of Justice is investigating whether the judicial reforms violate the rule of law.

Philippine committee completes draft of new constitution. On Tuesday, the Philippines’ Consultative Committee finished its draft of a revised constitution, which is expected to be presented to President Rodrigo Duterte and then Congress. The draft devolves power to federal units (each with two senators); limits presidents to two four-year terms (currently presidents may serve a single six-year term); and bars family members of politicians from seeking office.

South African court recognizes inheritance rights of multiple spouses. Last Friday, the Constitutional Court of South Africa ruled that all surviving spouses of polygamous marriages under Islamic law are entitled to the benefits of a deceased spouse’s will. The court ruled that preferencing a decedent’s first spouse violates subsequent spouses’ constitutional rights to equality and dignity.
