French Assembly removes “race” from constitution. Last week, the French Assembly voted to remove the word “race” from the French Constitution’s list of categories of citizens that are guaranteed equality before the law.  The move, which still requires Senate approval, is premised on the principle that race does not exist.
Israel adopts Basic Law declaring country “national home” for Jewish people. On Thursday, Israel’s legislature adopted a new Basic Law that declares Israel as the “national home of the Jewish people” and demotes Arabic from an “official language” to a “special” language. The law, which nearly included a provision permitting housing discrimination, has sparked intense fear among the country’s Arab minority.
Cuban constitution to include property rights, foreign investment. The Cuban government, which has been working on constitutional reforms, will reportedly allow foreign investment and recognize private property in the new constitution. The move is part of a decade-long push to liberalize markets and access to information.
