Hungarian PM secures constitutional majority. On Sunday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling coalition secured a constitutional majority. International observers and members of the Hungarian opposition are concerned that Orban, with the ability to alter the country’s constitution, will act to further erode the rule of law and freedom of the press.
Colombia’s Supreme Court orders protection of Amazon. Last Thursday, Colombia’s Supreme Court of Justice ordered the government to take greater steps to protect the Amazon from deforestation, declaring the Amazon a legal entity entitled to protection, preservation, maintenance, and restoration. The suit was brought by a group of young Colombians who argued that deforestation threatens their constitutional rights to a healthy environment, life, food, and water.
Indian court protects constitutional rights to marriage and religion. On Monday, the Supreme Court of India overturned a lower court ruling that barred a woman, who had converted from Hinduism to Islam, from living with her husband. The case became a political flashpoint as right-wing Hindu nationalists believe that Muslim men are attempting to take over the country by persuading Hindu women to convert to Islam.
