Thailand approves new constitution. Thai voters approved a new constitution on Monday, beginning a 5-year process of transitioning from the military junta government, which took control via a coup two years ago, to a civilian government. During the months leading up to the vote, the junta banned campaigning on the referendum, and critics maintain that the new constitution places too much authority in the hands of the military.
Italy to vote on constitutional reform. On Monday, Italy's highest court gave the go-ahead for a national referendum to take place this fall, in which Italians will vote on constitutional reforms that would reduce the size and power of the Senate and diminish the power of regional governments. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, whose party proposed the amendments, has pledged to resign if the reforms are not approved.
Indian parliament approves nationwide sales tax. On Monday, India's parliament approved amending the constitution to introduce a nationwide sales tax, paving the way for the country's biggest tax reform since independence. The "Goods and Services Tax" (GST) must now be approved by a majority of states, after which a committee composed of national and state figures would set specific rates.
