Palestinian president establishes a constitutional court. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' recently-established constitutional court began service Monday and now acts as Palestine's top court. Abbas has faced criticism for exclusively appointing justices affiliated with his Fatah party and ignoring the opposition, Hamas.
Congolese MPs seek court ruling on status of president if no elections are held. Members of the Democratic Republic of Congo's parliament will seek a ruling from the Constitutional Court regarding whether President Joseph Kabila would remain in office or the president of the Senate would replace him if the country fails to hold elections on time. Many believe Kabila, who is constitutionally prohibited from running for a third term, will attempt to remain in power beyond his mandate.
Pakistani government hopes to expand eligibility for election commission. The Pakistani government will introduce a constitutional amendment that would allow bureaucrats and civil servants to serve as members of the country's election commission. The decision comes after opposition parties spoke against the current eligibility restrictions, which allow only retired judges to oversee elections.
